So, where are pulse discharge capacitors used? Applications for pulse discharge capacitors are where energy is required for triggering an event such as downhole drilling fireset circuitry, exploding foil initiators, slapper detonators, Munitions, Ignition Circuits, and High Reliability pulse switching circuits. As an example, Exploding Foil Initiators (or EFIs) are used extensively in military and civilian applications to detonate explosives. EFIs contain conductive traces leading up to a layer of foil under an explosive pellet. Between the foil and explosive pellet is a dielectric flyer plate which is made from a special dielectric plastic. In the firing sequence, the capacitor is discharged into the foil where it creates high dense plasma under the flyer plate sending a sheared off portion through the barrel at very high velocities. The piece of the flyer plate will impact the pellet creating a shock wave and a subsequent detonation of the EFI.
