Optocouplers have many reliability issues that system designers would like to solve. Optocoupler lifetimes are greatly reduced with operating temperature and forward turn-on current. In addition, the internal LED output degrades as it ages. That requires more turn-on current which increases the aging effects. Additionally, the reduced lifetimes, age, and environmental conditions can strongly affect specifications such as propagation delay. The Si87xx products do not use any LEDs. They avoid the variations normally associated with LED usage. The isolation technology used for the Si87xx family is completely CMOS and does not exhibit any of the age or temperature variations associated with optocouplers.
