The previous slides showed temperature performance of MLP and MLS capacitors. So, what is the difference in the capacitor types? The MLP has an aluminum case that limits it’s maximum temperature to 85°C. Above 85°C the case expands and stretches its 0.5 inch dimension. The customer can operate the MLP to 105°C, if one clamps it to hold it flat, and it can operate to 125°C, if one clamps and limits the applied voltage to 80% of the rated voltage. The MLS case is stainless steel and so the case does not stretch and it can be used to 125°C. However, the stainless makes the MLS about 40% heavier than the MLP and about double the cost.
