Current is fed into the LED, which emits light at a known wavelength. On the other side of the tube is a phototransistor. As more light hits this device, more current flows. Different materials have different transmission characteristics. For example, more light will flow through a water-filled tube than will flow through a blood-filled tube. The next page shows some typical voltages associated with a few different materials.
