The output converter typically does not draw a steady current. Rather, the current is in step with the IGBT switching. As the input converter cannot readily handle the current peaks, the DC bus voltage would have a significant ripple component which could adversely affect the operation of the system. It is necessary to place a capacitor of sufficient size on the DC bus to serve as a ripple smoothing filter. This capacitor is commonly called a DC link capacitor.
