As can be seen in this slide, the heat column functions in a similar manner as the heat pipe. The heat from the source at the bottom vaporizes the water which then rises to the top. At the top the water vapor condenses and flows back down to the bottom. Air flow through the external fins helps remove the heat from the structure.
