Each LTC4233 and LTC4234 is production tested at one point on the SOA graph. The SOA graph for the LTC4233 is shown on this slide. Its SOA is tested by applying 13.5V from input to output and sourcing 3A from the output for 30ms. The resulting power dissipation is 41W. This is shown by the red dot in the SOA graph and also in the electrical characteristics table in the LTC4233 datasheet, as shown by the datasheet specification below the SOA graph. The LTC4234 is tested with the same voltage but double the current and power, that is, 6A and 81W for the same 30ms time period. Since hot swap circuits are the gateway to board power, a MOSFET failure can potentially damage the entire board. Production testing every controller’s SOA ensures a more reliable solution that is guaranteed to handle the stresses encountered in hot swap applications.
