Rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, and conventional electrolytics are each best suited for specific types of tasks. Batteries provide the highest stored energy and longest discharge time, but are slow to charge and gradually lose strength over their lifespan. Supercaps have higher power density than electrolytic capacitors, but a lower maximum operating voltage. Unlike rechargeable batteries, an EDC/EDS coin cell capacitor is especially well-suited for providing short, high-power bursts of energy. Recharging is fast, and performance does not degrade over a very long lifespan. Aluminum electrolytics deliver high power and performance over a broad temperature range and are available in high-voltage ratings.
