The IP Code, or Ingress Protection Rating, classifies and rates electrical enclosures by the degree of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects, dust, accidental physical contact, and water. These specifications are formalized in IEC 60529. The standard aims to provide standards for testing and rating that are more definitive than vague terms such as “water resistant” or “dustproof.” The characteristic numerals of the IP code indicate specific levels of conformity. The first digit of the two digit code specifies the level of protection against the ingress of solid objects, and the table shown on this slide delineates the 7 levels of compliance. When installed in a compliant enclosure, the DMR20’s construction supports the highest level of protection against the ingress of solid objects.
