A very versatile method of boosting the current monitor range of Current Output Current Monitors is shown here. It uses only one transistor and two resistors in addition to the normal parts. The dotted line in the diagram indicates that the ground pin (for those devices that have one) should be connected to the base of the transistor as shown. The only real limit to how high the Current Monitor range can be extended here is the VCEO rating of the transistor provided it has an hfe that is not less than 100. The higher the hfe, the better. If necessary, TR1 could be made a Darlington pair.
